In this workshop attendees will explore the use of encaustic medium (beeswax and damar resin) as well as encaustic paints (encaustic medium and pigments) to transform photographic based images into tactile works with a sense of soft focus, optical depth and layered imagery. After a brief discussion on the history of encaustic painting, and more specifically the more recent use of photography & encaustic, participants will be given an overview of the studio set-up for working with encaustic paints as well as safety procedures. Rehmer will demonstrate the basics of working with encaustic from panel prep to different fusing tools and methods as well as over-painting and hand-colored image transfer techniques. This workshop will include plenty of hands-on work time for participants to explore working with their own images. Please bring a work apron and wear painting studio appropriate clothing. All materials needed for this workshop are included with the registration fee.
