Filter Photo is pleased to announce an open call for lens-based work for a juried exhibition, Deception. The exhibition will have a public reception on September 21st during the 2017  Filter Photo Festival. Deception will be juried by Brian Paul Clamp, Owner and Director, ClampArt. The exhibition will be held at Filter Space. The juror will award a Juror’s Choice prize and an Honorable Mention. The Juror’s Choice awardee will receive a $500 cash prize.

Deception will be open concurrently with our other open call, we like small things, September 15  – October 21, 2017 with a Public Reception that coincides with the opening of the 2017 Filter Photo Festival on Thursday, September 21st, 6-9 pm.

According to Wikipedia the word Deception can mean beguilement, deceit, bluff, mystification, ruse, or subterfuge or is the act of propagating beliefs in things that are not true, or not the whole truth (as in half-truths or omission). Deception can involve dissimulation, propaganda, and sleight of hand, as well as distraction, camouflage, or concealment.  For this open call for work, juror Brian Paul Clamp, Director of ClampArt, will consider all types of lens-based media that considers deception in its various manifestations – conceptual, visual, or formal.

September 8 – Accepted work must arrive at Filter Space

All types of photographic and lens-based work will be considered, including short videos (maximum 15 minutes). You may submit any combination of images or video links, up to a total of five.  The cost to submit is $30.00 for three images/videos. Additional images are $5.00 each, up to five images/videos in total. 

Save your images in JPEG format, sized at 1000 pixels on the longest side.  Image files must be titled with the artist’s last and first names, and the image number.  Example:  Smith_Mary_1.jpg


Provide a link to your video (15 minutes maximum).  It must be accessible without a login or password.  Example:


About the Juror

Brian Paul Clamp has over twenty years of experience in the fine art world.  In 2000, after completing a Master of Arts degree in Critical Studies in Modern Art at Columbia University, he opened ClampArt, a gallery in Chelsea specializing in modern and contemporary art with an emphasis on photography.  ClampArt mounts eight to twelve exhibitions per year featuring the work of emerging and mid-career photographers.  For eight years prior to opening ClampArt, Brian Paul Clamp served as the director of a gallery on Manhattan’s Upper East Side specializing in late 19th- and early 20th-century American art.  Aside from exhibitions at his own gallery space, Clamp has curated numerous photography shows at various venues throughout the United States.  Brian Paul Clamp is the author of numerous publications on American art to date, and also occasionally contributes written work to various art periodicals.
