In recognition of the increasing importance of the photo book, Filter Photo is pleased to announce an open call for our first ever photo book exhibition! Our goal is to showcase well-thought-out, original, and compelling photo books in a public exhibition. Eligible entries include all types of photo books, whether self-published, handmade, or commercially published. Books by or featuring the work of more than one photographer/artist are also eligible in to submit. All are welcome to apply. The juror is Gregory Harris, Assistant Curator of the DePaul Art Museum.
A Juror’s choice award and honorable mention will be awarded. The Juror’s choice award comes with a $500 cash prize.
Selected entries will be exhibited at Harrington College of Design’s ground floor gallery from September 5th to September 30th with a reception and juror’s talk on Wednesday, September 24th. The reception will be a featured event of the 2014 Filter Photo Festival.
The exhibition will travel to the Madison Public Library as part of the Wisconsin Book Festival (October 16-19) and will be on view during the SPE Midwest conference (October 16th-18th). The library is also hosting the FlakPhoto Midwest Print Show and there will be a reception for both exhibitions in the Madison Room at the Central Library on Saturday, October 18th from 6:30-7:30 PM. The reception is free and open to the public.
The Madison Public Library’s Wisconsin Book Festival is a celebration of authors, books, and the written word that features local literary talents alongside national voices. The festival brings incredible author experiences to Madison during the 4-day celebration every fall, as well as, through its year-long events series.
Flak Photo is an online photography channel that presents the work of artists, curators, bookmakers and photo organizations to a global audience of people who are passionate about visual culture. Flak Photo is teaming up with The BUBBLER @ Madison Public Library to present a FlakPhoto Midwest Print Show to be held at the Madison Public Library in September/October 2014.
Please note that books accepted into this exhibition will be put on display and will be available for public handling. Filter Photo, Madison Public Library and Harrington College of Design cannot guarantee the condition of books at the time the exhibition closes. Also, to deter theft, the books may be installed in such a manner that leaves them unfit for later sale. Artists accepted into this exhibition will have a choice of: (A) donating the book to Filter Photo as a tax deductible charity donation equal to its fair market value (i.e. the price at which it would be sold); or (B) signing a written waiver that absolves Filter Photo, Madison Public Library and Harrington of responsibility for damage incurred during installation and exhibition. If the artist chooses to sign this waiver and provides appropriate postage, Filter Photo will return the book as-is at the close of the exhibition.
